# 7 Signs It's Time to Remove a Tree (Before It's Too Late)

A tree in your yard is an asset — until it isn't. Dead, diseased, and structurally compromised trees can come down without warning, causing thousands of dollars in damage and putting your family at risk. Here are the seven signs we look for when assessing whether a tree needs to come down.

1. More Than 50% of the Tree Is Dead or Dying A tree that has lost more than half its canopy to disease, drought, or storm damage is unlikely to recover. It will continue to decline, losing structural integrity, until it falls. If you're seeing major branch dieback across the crown, it's time for an assessment.

2. The Trunk Has Deep Cracks or Cavities Hollow trunks and deep vertical cracks signal severe structural weakness. A cavity in the trunk means the wood that holds the tree up has been compromised by rot or insects. These trees can look fine from a distance while being dangerously unstable.

3. The Tree Has a Significant Lean Most trees have a slight natural lean, but a tree that has developed a sudden or pronounced lean — especially after a storm or wet season — may have root failure on the uphill side. This is a serious warning sign.

4. Mushrooms or Fungal Growth at the Base Fungi like conks and mushrooms growing from the root flare or base of the trunk indicate root rot or internal decay. By the time you can see the fruiting bodies, the internal damage may already be severe.

5. The Tree Is Dead A completely dead tree has no structural defense against decay. Wood that would take years to rot in a living tree deteriorates quickly once the tree dies. Dead trees should be removed promptly, especially near structures or high-traffic areas.

6. Major Roots Are Damaged or Exposed Construction work, soil compaction, or erosion can damage the root system. A tree with major structural roots severed or exposed may not have enough anchoring to withstand the next big storm.

7. It's Leaning Over Your House, Driveway, or Power Lines Even a healthy tree is a liability when it's positioned to cause serious damage if it falls. If a large tree is situated where its failure would strike your home, a vehicle, or electrical infrastructure, the risk of leaving it may outweigh the cost of removal.
