# Stump Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal: Which Do You Need?
After a tree comes down, you're left with a choice: grind the stump or remove it entirely. Both have their place — the right option depends on what you plan to do with the space afterward.
Stump Grinding
Stump grinding uses a rotating carbide cutting wheel to chew the stump down 6–12 inches below ground level. The result is a pile of wood chips and a hole that fills in over time as the remaining roots decay.
**Best for:** - Lawn restoration (you can sod or seed right over the area) - Quick, cost-effective removal - When the area doesn't need deep excavation - Most residential situations
**Pricing:** $5–$8 per inch of stump diameter, minimum $150.
**Limitations:** The root system remains underground and decomposes over 3–7 years. You won't be able to build a structure over the area without full excavation.
